It is essential for social workers to understand the needs of the community in order to develop an effective proposal that addresses social health issues. This assignment will help you learn this skill.
For this assignment, you will assess culture and subculture in your selected community. For instance, you may decide to select your neighborhood community. Some students may select the community here at GCU or another university campus.
Answer the following prompts to assist you:

Topic 1: Social Issues

After reading the “Mock Community” case study, list the social issues this community is dealing with. Describe the target population and characteristics of this population (racial/ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic status, age, etc.).
Some of the socioeconomic questions faced by this group include the division of families, economic difficulties, infant welfare, school breaks, work losses, housing security, shortage of support and mental deprivation of both parents and adolescents. For this community, the focus group is illegal immigrants in Arizona. There are 244,000 people in this city, about half of whom live in poverty. For more than ten years, most of these people have been settled here in the United States, 51 percent of the population between the ages of 25 and 44 have moved from Mexico. Just 24% of these people are high school graduates and most children under 18 are enrolled in school, but 8% of children in this group are not enrolled. Much of these people may not speak much or no English. 73% of these people live in poverty, while about half of them are working. Of 39% of people who are not employed and 7% rely on unemployment.

Using the Risk and Protective Factors page from SAMHSA located in the Study Materials, describe the risk and protective factors in the “Mock Community” that might contribute to the social issues presented in this case study. (50-75 words)
Any risk factors that lead to the reality that most people live in poverty are refugees and do not know English. Any mitigating variables may be that some are GED or high school students and a relatively limited number of them have a BA, which helps them live well above the poverty line.

What are the unique characteristics of the community in the case study? (30-50 words)
Any of the interesting features are that most don’t understand English, while they have been residing in the United States for 10 years or more. What is even more interesting is that really friends still have cash flow problems

Describe any resources available for the target population presented in the mock community. Are they easily accessible? Explain whether or not there is a resource gap. (50-75 words)
The facilities accessible to this group are a pantry, a wardrobe, emergency care, etc. This are readily available but often people are terrified to leave because they are being detained and frightened to be removed. While these are some fantastic services, there is a resource gap since they have no work support, medical care, expertise, and economic support like they were described.

Explain whether or not the community recognizes the social issues and the need for programs or resources that address these social issues. (50-75 words)
They are mindful of social problems, but they are unable to leave to search for work. The services they know are provided and they deal with social professionals and tell them what they want and need, but when the issue of career skills or stakeholders of the company pops up their address it shortly but little has been achieved with this.

The social matter that I have chosen is the shortage of safe water and the lack of things to do in my home city, Dos Palos.

My goal demographic is my neighborhood of 5,351 citizens with unhygienic treated wastewater. there is need to get water which will be clean to drink as not get sick at all.

The problem began in 2013, with traces of algae in the aqueducts. My city got a grant of half a million dollars that year. Because we had to use plastic bottles to replace it

The socioeconomic problems facing my neighborhood are that we have limited access to safe drinking water. We must depend on water bottled. We can’t cook with it, because while we can take the tub, there are always signs of algae there, so we don’t get washed correctly despite showering. In 2019, our water was off for 3 days last year to clean up aqueducts and claim that the water is fit to drink again. However, for many days it reeked with chlorine until we could use it again. When we could use it, they finally informed us that it was still not secured. Any safeguards may be that we get funding to repair it, but it always needs to be handled.

To perform their group evaluation, they used surveys and interviews. You might find out if the population was overweight. This is because this population lives in hunger, and fried foods are cheaper than nutritious foods. The reality that most people in this area lived in poverty leads to why they became overweight. However, in their neighborhood supermarkets, they had access to outdoor fitness infrastructure and nutritious food choices. They wanted to make Latinos reside more likely in places with reduced affordability of nutritious food and business centers. There were some areas in which the surveys and interviews were conducted such that the result would be accurate. Due to the rise in cases of drug abuse in the GCU community, there is need for assessment and identification of the respective factors that cause the eruption of the alcoholic behavior. The assessment and the study of the community is an activity that helps in the identification of each individual factor regarding to the activities contribution to the high levels of alcoholism in the community. This implies that various cases of substance abuse in the community need to be derived and identified. In the GCU community, there are various norms and behavers practiced from time to time. The culture in the particular community is an important aspect that dictates various activities and implementations as realized ion the GCU community. Foremost, the population of the community is at above average per meter square. This implies that the population, together with the eroded culture realized form different students and people from different backgrounds have a great relationship with the issue of alcoholism in the GCU community.
The culture and other various operations in the GCU environment have a major relationship and cause for the realization of the particular activities. Foremost, the dense population and high number of students in the respective environment makes a perfect market for the sale and the consumption of alcoholic substances. Besides, the influence that is realized between the students and other residents in the GCU community is another cause of the consumption of alcoholic substances. Moreover, the presence of financial support, together with the diversity of the population in the particular environment acts as a brooding place for the improvement and the increase of substance abuse which includes alcoholic substances. The regular festivals held at the GCU environment and community also have a blame in the skyrocketing of cases of alcoholism. Such circumstance related to the culture of the GCU community lead to the alcoholism realized.
The consumption of alcoholic material and substance in the GCU community and the surrounding society comes with various cases and issues that affect the respective population in different aspects. Foremost, substance abuse is illegal and undesired in most areas. the GCU community is among the areas that have restrictions regarding to the consumption of some substances (“How Alcoholism Affects Society”, 2021). However, these activities still find way to infiltrate to the community, and thus the issues realized from the respective activities. Foremost, the consumption of alcoholic substance leads to the degrade of ethics in the community. From such circumstances, issues relating to the welfare and the general behavior of the residents in the community are realized. The ethics and the intended behavior is slowly eroded and unintended and arrogant behavior takes charge. Such results and impacts usually cost the culture and the general behavior of the community. When the population and the residents of the community engage in alcoholism, they tend to forget their functions and mandates in their respective homes and other areas. such conditions deal a great blow on the ethics of the community.
Apart for the erosion of ethics and behavior in the community, there is the financial cost that is realized due to the abuse and the consumption of alcoholic substances in a particular community. When the population of a particular community engage in the consumption and the abuse of alcoholic substances, there is a tendency of high financial costs (“How Alcoholism Affects Society”, 2021). The costs are witnessed in various processes and circumstances. Some conditions include the recurrent purchase of the particular alcoholic substances, which has a great impact on the financial status of the respective individuals. There are various cases and issues of individuals getting bankrupt due to their alcoholic consumption habits. Such circumstances clearly illustrate the issues that the community faces due to the consumption of alcoholic substances. these impacts felt on the community are witnessed and realized in individual cases and in general circumstance sin the society.
Healthcare expense is another issue that the community faces due to the involvement of alcoholism and substance abuse (“How Alcoholism Affects Society”, 2021). The intake of alcoholic substance to the human body alters the function and the operation of the body organs, in such a situation them individuals who engage in the consumption and the intake of alcoholic substance find various complications and health issues. This affects their productivity in the community. Form such a circumstance, the impacts of the problem of alcoholism in the community is realized.
The cultural competence step, which includes the assessment, capacity, planning and evacuation is an effective way to use in overcoming the respective circumstances and conditions. this implies that the particular assessment will be used to acquire the required information and data that would help to contain the particular condition and issues realized in the particular environment (Coulthard et. Al 2020). Capacity is used to examine all the available resources and the comparative readiness and the stealthiest in the community. These factors will help to deal with the respective issue. Planning helps to arrange and present the implementation of strategies and methods to deal with the issues affecting the community. Evacuation helps to ensure the representation of the community in the process of evaluation. This will help to achieve the desired result.
The characteristics of the selected resources related to the particular situation include the schools, healthcare centers and non-government organizations that provide the required human service and help to the particular circumstance. various uses of the resources such as the improvement of the health status of every individual or person having issues with the activities of alcoholism are realized. Besides, physical and emotional assistance to the particular individuals having battles and issues regarding the abuse and the use and the consumption of alcoholic substance. This implies that the application and the implementation of the resources appropriately will help to reduce cases and issues realized from alcoholism in the community.
Stakeholders involved in this issue include police officers in the GCU community, the population and the university itself. These stakeholders have various mandates and tasks to implement in the process of overcoming the effects and the impacts of alcoholism in the community and the society. As a social worker, there are various operations and activities that I can implement to involve the stakeholders in the process and the quest to overcome the particular issues realized form the abuse of alcoholic substance. provision of relevant data and information about the factors and activities in the community that help to improve the particular exercise is among the measures. This will help the police and other stakeholders to device ways to curb the particular issues faced due to substance abuse.
From the cultural competence of the community, the ethical nature required in all the aspects and circumstance is among the best strategy and method that ca be involved and included in the fight against the respective behavior and activities related to alcoholism in the community (Coulthard et. Al 2020). This implies that the behavior of the whole community will be affected, thus creating a positive impact on the fight against alcoholism. When residents and the population in the community perform ethical behaviors and implementations, the abuse of alcoholic substance will be subsided, and likewise to the particular effects and impacts. Besides, the customs and the traditions of the particular residents in the community are enforced, where the ban on alcoholic drinks and other related substances is raised. Starting Out Right for Teen Parents (SORTP) is a program that provides expectant and parenting youth with an innovative combination of pre-natal and post-natal supports, such as case management, pregnancy, and parenting education classes, home visits, and a companion mobile app, to increase their protective factors and reduce the risk of rapid repeat pregnancy. The project’s goals are to increase the protective factors of the participants and decrease participants’ risk factors for rapid repeat pregnancy, to provide participants with a high level of support during the first 6 months after childbirth, to integrate case management and pregnancy education services into the medical home model, and to use digital technology to increase participants’ access to health education.
The program entails pregnant adolescents who have unique challenges and needs. The willing participants receive guidance and assistance to achieve a healthy pregnancy accompanied by a healthy newborn. The program educates the expecting mother on her pregnancy health and wellness, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, birth control, healthy relationships, and newborn care and safety among many other services. The program also offers effective facilitation techniques to engage adolescents and strategic methods that maximize their learning and comprehension.
Since 1990, Arizona Youth Partnership (AZYP) has been recognized as a leader in Arizona for its expertise in providing prevention and community-building resources to help youth grow into healthy, self-sufficient adults. Starting Out Right (SOR) is a community-based health education and supportive services program for pregnant and parenting young people aged 21 and under in Gila, Pima, and Maricopa Counties. Healthy pregnancy, childbirth, parenting, and healthy relationship and lifestyle classes, as well as an interactive mobile application, are all part of health education. For about 5 years, the Starting Out Right (SOR) program has collaborated with the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona. Their commitment to providing emergency diapers in the Tucson community, particularly to SOR clients, has a significant impact on the high-risk population that Starting Out Right serves.
The program is on the right path of reaching out to people since it has closed all gaps between the needed services and those that are provided. The agency through this program has achieved to effectively meet the needs of pregnant teenagers for more than 15 years. The program has extensively addressed the teenage pregnancy issues among the citizens of Arizona counties and has extended the same idea to different states in the United States which have adopted the same ideas in helping to reduce teenage pregnancies and taking care of the recent cases of teenage pregnancies in their respective states.
According to the collected data by Arizona Youth Partnership (AZYP), 103 pregnant and parenting youth participated in the Starting Out Right campaign, where they received pregnancy, childbirth, parenting, and healthy life skills education, as well as individualized case management services from Gila, Pima, and Maricopa County Health Educators. 63 healthy babies were born into this world where 50 were breastfeeding at the time of discharge from the hospital and only six were admitted to the NICU.
Starting Out Right campaign provides teen-specific, unbiased facilitation that is based on brain-based learning principles and assists adolescents in making sense of pregnancy and parenting class material. Starting Out Right facilitators provide best practices and medically accurate information to clients to help them make decisions during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period. Recently, AZYP presented its program curriculum at several conferences which were well received.
The program analysis of the Starting Out Right for teen parents program by the Arizona Youth Program is of great help and reference point as I design my program to fill in the gap of educating the parents about teenage pregnancy issues. As the program will extensively reach out to teenagers to help in data collection, the parents should also be educated on the best ways to support their child. The program will include training to the parent of pregnant teenagers to educate them on how to deal with their children considering their situation. Some parents may tend to be harsh on their children which stress the pregnant teens which may cause miscarriage cases or stillbirths. Though it is not ethically acceptable for children of age 21 and younger to engage in sexual activities, the parent should be educated on the best way to react and deal with the issue hence supporting the teen.
The program will also establish the best techniques to be deployed to reduce teenage pregnancies around the state considering Arizona is ranked the 5th worst in the nation due to the condition of their children and families. The program will help in the development and evaluation of new and innovative approaches to prevent teenage pregnancy which is on the rise at an alarming rate. To reduce disparities in teen pregnancy and birth rates, the program is intended to reach adolescents aged 10 to 19, with a focus on populations with the greatest need.

The program has reached out to most pregnant teenagers through online surveys. The data collection procedure has been effective since many pregnant teenagers have responded and are attaining necessary assistance from the agency.

The agency uses prescriptive data techniques to analyze its data. The data analysis strategy has been effective which resulted in a 90% success birth rate for over 15 years.

The services provided by the agency do not have any gaps. The agency should publish the testimonies of the recent teen parents who got the opportunity to acquire help from the program. These stories would then encourage other pregnant teenagers to step forward and ask for assistance without fear of discrimination from society.

The agency could include training to the parent of pregnant teenagers to educate them on how to deal with their children considering their situation. Poverty is a social issue that refers to a person or a community that lacks all the resources that all members in the community need for them to have good living standards. Poverty affects all members of a particular community, even if they are not all poor. The needy members have low incomes that they cannot depend on; hence they rely on other community members for their wellbeing from time to time. (Umanailo, M. (2020). Poverty in communities is caused by several factors, like many people living in a small area with limited resources, unemployment, and the lack of capital to start and maintain their businesses. Inadequate education of people living in a community will contribute to them being poor because they do not have the necessary skills to manage the little they have and develop comfortable lives.

Explain your proposed research design (50-75 words):
The research design used is quantitative research. There is a systematic investigation of all the factors that lead to poverty and the effects and poverty on the community. The data collected was quantifiable and was used to determine the overall results mathematically or computed into graphs or pie charts to determine the various relationships between factors that lead to poverty and their effects.

Literature review

Poverty in communities is caused by a lack of nutritious food and nutritional information about their food. The lack of adequate infrastructure makes people unable to produce goods and services that can be used to earn them a living and support their families. Poor living conditions in a community negatively affect their mental and physical health since they are not in the best need to work or think about the way forward. (Thornton, K. D. (2018). Poverty is caused by many factors leading to food insecurity as well as homelessness and substandard living conditions. People living in poverty can quickly spread diseases among themselves without getting the proper care they need because they cannot afford healthcare services. Alternatively, healthcare costs keep getting higher, but since they cannot afford these services, their conditions keep getting worse, thus deteriorating their living conditions.
The Christian worldview can influence the prevention of poverty and helping the poor by encouraging everyone, whether Christian or not, to follow the teachings of the bible and help each other in the community to live better lives. It can sensitize people to cooperate when working together to provide the community’s critical needs and help eliminate poverty. People need constant encouragement that no situation is permanent. Through hard work, they will one day overcome poverty and manage to live better lives, and the Christian worldview is responsible for such encouragements and helping people raise their hopes of better lives.
A social worker with a Christian worldview will help alleviate poverty in the community by providing the most urgent basic needs to the needy members of the community. These social workers can provide necessities like food, clothing, and shelter as more help is expected to come from the Christian worldview. The social workers can also offer other services like healthcare and education by joining hands with other social offices in the community. Above all, these social workers encourage the community members to work harder and slowly manage to escape from poverty and live better lives. (Parkkonen, J. (2017). By using their knowledge and skills, social workers help improve the low-income families’ situations by addressing their social problems, solving the most pressing needs, and following other requirements later. Social workers also mobilize other community members to help the less fortunate by donating some items to them, thus making them feel more comfortable.
We found out that six out of every ten families investigated were lacking in a particular community due to some varied factors among these families. Other factors were consistent, which was then identified as the leading cause of poverty for the residents of those communities. The topmost cause of poverty was the lack of jobs and employment opportunities among family members, followed by the lack of education by the same members. (Nelson 3rd, C. A. (2017). Climate change contributed to their poverty since they could not predict the patterns of favorable climate to use to cultivate crops both for consumption or for sale to earn them more money for their upkeep. Other families had specific conflicts within themselves, which led to other members becoming estranged and not managing to provide for themselves. The inequality in the society creates divisions by making other members belong to a wealthy class while others are of an inferior class.


Poverty is a menace that society has tried its best to eliminate in various communities but to no avail. Poor people in the community live a different life than the rest of the community, thus leading to their isolation because of their social status and standards. Various organizations, people, and churches have all joined hands to help eradicate poverty in the community. (McFarland, B. H. (2017). It is essential to eliminate poverty to improve the living conditions of all community members so that no one among them feels inferior to another member. For poverty to be eradicated almost wholly, members of a society should have access to good livelihoods and be given opportunities to work and earn a living for themselves. The government and other organizations should provide all the needed services and easy access to those services to help people overcome the effects of poverty and fight poverty.

The poverty rate is measured by assessing the level of substandard housing, the level of family’s incomes, and the affordability of basic amenities. Poverty increases pressure on Finances as there are more opportunities cost than the resources available to settle them. These results in economic vulnerability and reduces the country’s economic productivity. In a measure of 1.3% of the United States’ GDP, the leads to a lag in the growth as money could be used in economic productivity is used to service effects caused by poverty. Children who drop out of school due to poverty are more likely to opt into crime-related activities leading to increased crime involvement in the country. Poverty is the reason behind poor nutrition, which leads to poor health and the increased cases of chronic illnesses and mental health. This makes government spend more on the health sector instead of spending on production.
